Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin with the molecular formula C19H19N7O6. It is named after its abundant content in green leaves, also known as pteroylglutamic acid. There are several forms of existence in nature, and their parent compounds are formed by combining three components: pteridine, p-aminobenzoic acid, and glutamic acid.
Folic acid contains one or more glutamyl groups, and most naturally occurring folic acid is in the form of polyglutamic acid. The bioactive form of folic acid is tetrahydrofolate. Folic acid is a yellow crystal that is slightly soluble in water, but its sodium salt is highly soluble in water. Insoluble in ethanol. It is easily damaged in acidic solutions and unstable to heat. It is easily lost at room temperature and easily damaged when exposed to light.
